Benefits of Breast Reconstruction after a Mastectomy

Cancer originating from the breasts is a fatal condition if not detected early enough. However when identified, the doctor may decide to do a mastectomy on the patient and eliminate the malignant cells before they spread it to other parts of the body. After this is done, women need to undergo breast reconstruction surgery to restore the lost tissues. It varies since there are cases where only one breast removed in which case the reconstructed one has to match the older one. Others may require reconstruction of both since they may have been affected by the mastectomy.

There are many psychological effects of having a mastectomy. One of them is that the patient is torn between the feelings of triumph after beating the spread of the disease. On the other hand, they are faced by the trauma of the loss of their femininity. After breast reconstruction, the patients regain their initial femininity and they are able to beat the trauma. However many require extra motivation to get back on the operating table since the initial surgery leading to the loss is still fresh in their minds and therefore they are not willing to get back on it.

The procedure does not involve any nerve grafting and therefore the new implant will be lacking of any feeling. However, over time they come to accept the graft as their own and do not look at it any other way. Generally most women are happy with the results obtained since they feel as feminine as they felt before the mastectomy.
